Baptism is a customary step in becoming a follower of Jesus. Baptism is not what makes you saved, but instead, it’s an outward expression of the inner commitment you made to follow Jesus. When you accept Jesus as your Savior and commit to giving control of your life to Him, baptism is the next step of obedience.
In the Bible, every example of baptism we see comes after a person first believes in Jesus, and then follows His commandment to be baptized, given in Matthew 28:19.
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
In Romans 6:1-11, the apostle Paul explains the significance and symbolism of baptism by immersion under water. He explains how when we go underwater, it symbolizes being buried with Jesus, and coming up out of the water represents His resurrection and how we, too, are raised to new life.
In Matthew 3:13-17, Jesus himself was baptized. Baptism is a symbol of your old self dying (going under the water) and the new you being raised to life (coming up out of the water) by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit was strong enough to raise Jesus from the dead. And after your decision to accept Jesus into your heart, you have that same life-changing power inside you!
